What is thanks giving ?

Thanksgiving is truly a special day. It was first celebrated in 1621 when the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians shared a fall harvest. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be held each year in November. In the United States, Thanksgiving is held on the fourth Thursday in November. Canada too has a national day of thanksgiving and that day occurs on the second Monday in October.

When we think of Thanksgiving we conjure up thoughts of leaves that have changed color and are falling from trees. We also think of visiting with family and friends, and watching Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade either in person or on television. Of course there are the traditional football games on television. Our memories also remind us of turkey dinners with all of the holiday trimmings; including stuffing! How many of us have had to loosen our belt a bit after a festive Thanksgiving Day dinner!

Thanksgiving Day is more than a day of fond memories, parades, football, and special dinners. It is also a day of thanks. On Thanksgiving Day we are reminded of the bounty of treasures that is a part of our lives. We spend a few moments before the Thanksgiving dinner to give thanks for the richness of our lives and for our wonderful family and friends. For too many people, however, the meaning of Thanksgiving ends with spending a few moments of giving thanks at the dinner table.

The true meaning of Thanksgiving, however, should not end after a prayer or a few seconds of meditation devoted to thanks. The Holiday of Thanksgiving has broader significance. Thanksgiving is also a call to action. It is important for us to remember that the word thanksgiving is composed of two words: thanks and giving. Through the Holiday of Thanksgiving we are reminded to give thanks and to share and give. The Holiday reminds us to share our economic and material wealth, and to share also our time and talents with other people who could use our help. In terms of thought and deed, the Holiday of Thanksgiving gives us an enriched perspective on the abundance in our lives.

This Thanksgiving Day take a moment and reflect on what actions you can take in the next year to fully express the meaning of Thanksgiving. Can you think of a way to free-up one hour each week so that you can give that time to someone in need? What would you do during that time? By giving of your time and talent you are acknowledging that there is abundance in your life.

As you sit down to dinner this Thanksgiving, spend a few moments giving thanks. Also, share with your family and friends what actions you will take in the next year to fully express the meaning of Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Day is a traditionally day for families and friends to get together for a special meal. The meal often includes a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, pumpkin pie, and vegetables.

Thanksgiving Day is a time for many people to give thanks for what they have.Thanksgiving Day parades are held in some cities and towns on or around Thanksgiving Day. Some parades or festivities also mark the opening of the Christmas shopping season. Some people have a four-day weekend so it is a popular time for trips and to visit family and friends. The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, to commemorate the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony after a harsh winter. In that year Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving. The colonists celebrated it as a traditional English harvest feast, to which they invited the local Wampanoag Indians.

By the mid–1800s, many states observed a Thanksgiving holiday. Meanwhile, the poet and editor Sarah J. Hale had begun lobbying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, looking for ways to unite the nation, discussed the subject with Hale. In 1863 he gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation, declaring the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving. In 1939, 1940, and 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt, seeking to lengthen the Christmas shopping season, proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November. Controversy followed, and Congress passed a joint resolution in 1941 decreeing that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November.

Most government offices, businesses, schools and other organizations are closed on Thanksgiving Day. Many offices and businesses allow staff to have a four-day weekend so these offices and businesses are also closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day. Public transit systems do not usually operate on their regular timetables.Thanksgiving Day it is one of the busiest periods for travel in the USA. This can cause congestion and overcrowding. Seasonal parades and busy football games can cause disruption to local traffic. Abir Khattabi

Thanks giving

Thanks giving is a prayer that expresses thanks to god and an American tradition nowadays celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

Thanks giving is mainly an important day to the Americans, to remind them how thankful they should be for all they own and have .

It became an official holiday in 1863 during the civil war when the old president "Abraham Lincoln" suggested a national day of thanks giving to praise all the victims of the war.

How is it celebrated?

Thanks giving is celebrated with family, friends and of course a feast which means a turkey ( I guess it's a traditional food there ) . It's basically a day where everyone spends time together , playing, talking , eating and enjoying their time

What is Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in many countries to express gratitude and thank God for the good things in your life.

1.Friends and family. You’re never going to find people who’ll give you more love and support than your family, and you’ll never find people who will accept your crazy suggestions and do the crazy stuff you like other than your friends.

2.A roof over your head. In some countries, the snow is starting to fall, making it extremely cold. Be thankful for the warmth you have.

3.Food and water. Around 780 million people do not have access to safe drinking water, and people all over the world are starving to death due to economic reasons or a bad harvest.

4.Access to the internet. Could you imagine what the world would be like without the internet? The internet holds more knowledge than any human being. It can help you do your homework or it can help you relax, it’s a wonderful thing to be thankful for.

5.My health. People all around the world are starting to get infected by various diseases but I’m still healthy and well.

6.I am alive. How could you not be thankful for that? I know some people who, if they had been at the wrong place at the wrong time, wouldn’t be here anymore. Life is short, make the most out of it and live happily.

In 1620, a group of English people called the Pilgrims went to settle in North America. They were very religious people who set off to America in a ship called the Mayflower. They landed in a place they called Plymouth. Their first winter was harsh and many of them died due to cold and hunger. In the spring, the Pilgrims made friends with the Native Americans, who taught them to grow corn, beans and pumpkins. After their first harvest, the Pilgrims invited the Natives to a feast, which all of us remember as the Thanksgiving feast. 3 things i cant live without : My phone is one of the most important things in my life i cant live without its how i communicate with everyone. Five things I'm thankful for: 1. The first thing I'm thankful for is the great ability to live. One of my favorite definitions of living is "true to life". Being true to life, being honest living the life that God gave us is a beautiful gift and some people don't get to live the life that others have so we have to work hard to earn it to make it and to live it then be grateful for all u have 2. I'm thankful for my voice God blessed me with this beautiful voice that pleases people and more importantly myself and I should improve it and work hard for it to improve and that's another gift for sent me 3. I'm also thankful for my health I have a great health I haven't suffered from anything I don't have any bad organs even though I still am overweight and I am trying to fix that I have no reason why I shouldn't be thankful for my health so I am 4. I'm as well thankful for the environment I live in my house,my school, my loved ones even though there are some bad times I am still young and there could be worst but there isn't so I'm glad that I have a beautiful environment to protect me from the wrong 5. Last but not least my parents I am extremely thankful to have great parents who support me in everything I do and everything I want to do they love and care for me so much than I could ever believe I am thankful that God blessed me with these amazing parents, the best I could ask for️ Elena.S.

I personally do not celebrate thanksgiving but I really like it:

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November and in Canada on the second Monday of October.

Thanksgiving is a traditional day in which we give thanks for all the good moments and all the things people made for us , all the blessings and all the love they gave us. It’s usually celebrated with the family and friends.

I’m simply thankful for having the opportunity to go to school, to learn, to be able to eat good, to have a house, and all sorts of things other people in this world do not especially have. Being able to live in good conditions is enough to be the most thankful person ever and that is why thanksgiving day is really important. Let’s all be thankful today for the life we’re living and let’s celebrate together!

5 things I am thankful for this Thanksgiving

I have plenty of things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, and here are 5 of the most important to me:

1-Education

I am thankful for a solid education. As much as we teenagers don't like school, we fail to see how important education is, and how kids our age wish they could have this opportunity.

2-My health

I am grateful for my health. I always found it to be very important. A lot of people are affected by fatal diseases and some of them are incurable, and this made me realize how lucky I am not to be sick.

3-My country

I am lucky to be living in this country where food and water can be accessed easily and in a country where it is safe, compared to other places.

4-My friends

I am grateful for the fact that I have supportive friends who will always be here to cheer me up and stick by me when things get hard.

5-My family

And finally, I am thankful for my family who guided me in life and who were always by my side. Without them I'd be lost.

Thanksgiving

In the United States and Canada, Thanksgiving is a really important day where family and friends gather together and thank for the wonderful year they had.

Here are a few things I am thankful for this year :

- Personally, I am thankful for my family because they are so loving and caring. They would always be here to support me. Even in the toughest moments, they would always find a way to make you smile. My family has given me all the love they have but there is always more to come. They would trust me, wouldn't hesitate to follow me in all the projects I have.

- I am also very thankful to my teachers, who would always pay attention on your "weak points" and support you from the very beginning to the end. They would know what to do and always find a way to help you. I am thankful not only for the great support in our education but also their support in our personal problems.

- I am thankful for the great true and reliable friendship with my friends and the very good friendly ambiance in my class. One of the most beautiful qualities about friendship is to understand and to be understood. Their are the one who give you joy, pleasure and those funny, happy, wonderful moments.

- I am thankful for all the things I didn't want to experience, what I wanted was what I thought I needed. But that may not be the case. Yes they may be hard experiences but they teach you a lot, they give you "lessons", and may also give you confidence. I am thankful for my struggle, without it I wouldn't have pass across my strength. Those are only the few pieces of a puzzle of the person I am going to become.

- But I am also thankful for the little, but great moments I had, the answers I didn't ask, the help and support people gave me because they know I need it, not because I told them I needed it. I am thankful to see all the smiles that were actually given by us, all the effort we gave and the result we deserved, the joy we shared and the pain we make disappear.

Be thankful for what you have, you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.

What is Thanksgiving?

  • It became an official Federal holiday in 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens", to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.

The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. This feast lasted three days, and it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"—days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.

5 Things That I Am Thankful For :

1) I am thankful for always having food on my table.

2) I am thankful for having a lovely, healthy, wonderful and funny family that I love.

3) I am thankful for being healthy.

4) I’m thankful for music and the way it lifts my spirits when I'm down and that I live in a really joyful house.

5) I am thankful for having my grandparents around and for having amazing friends.

5 Things That I’m Thankful For :

  • Family: I honestly think that family is the most important thing in life, they’re people who will always be by my side and I can be myself, the real me, with them.

  • Health: Obviously, health is important. I may not be the healthiest person on earth but I try to avoid food that will destroy me physically and mentally and of course do sports.

  • My phone: It’s the best thing ever, I have everything in it: pictures, chats, etc… It holds amazing memories.

  • Friends: You can’t pick your family, but you can pick your friends. I consider some my friends like family, I’ve known them for a long time and we’ve been through so much and yet we are still unbreakable.

  • Money: I’m grateful that I have money, it doesn’t mean that I can buy everything I want but I thank god that I don’t need anything. My parents do work hard and sometimes I feel sad because I don’t always get the chance to just sit without them on their phone or talking about work.I’m just grateful for life.

And of course my English teacher J

A thanks giving is a very important celebration for the Americans. It is holding on the 4th Thursday of November.

They usually celebrate it with family and friends who might come from a long way to get together on that special day.

They usually eat turkey and pumpkin pie; they might even come with a dish to share.

The tradition of the pumpkin pie comes from the crusade. Indeed Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England to New England in the 1920’s.

The first cold and hard winter they all ate a pumpkin in order to survive. Also they found some pigeons and most of all turkeys that was able to feed a lot of people. We are celebrating this day to remember our ancestors who endured this crusade.

Even today the tradition remains. It is indeed a main event as important as Christmas.

You can also find this tradition in Canada, Island of Norfolk and Liberia.

I am thankful for this peaceful year with:

My baby brother (always laughing while ripping up my homework).

My mum (for always pampering me). And my dad (for his funny jokes).

In fact, I am thankful for having such a wonderful family.

I am also thankful for having really inspiring teacher, such as Miss. Sadaf, who always listens to us and always has cool projects for our class.

What is Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is a festival celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Americans celebrate it as an acknowledgement of gratitude for a plentiful harvest. Nearly the whole American continent celebrates this festival.

The American act of thanksgiving began during the early pioneer days almost four hundred years ago.

In 1620, one hundred people sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to land at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in America. However, their first winter was severe and their crops failed in the new climate and unfamiliar soil. Half of them died due to lack of fresh food.

The few who survived were saved by Native Americans of the Iroquois tribe who taught them how to grow corn (maize) and other crops, all of which were new food for the settlers.

In the next fall season, a lot of healthy crops of corn, barley, beans and pumpkins were harvested. In order to thank the Iroquois, the settlers invited them for a feast. The feast consisted of corn turkey and deer, cranberries and other Native American dishes.

Each year, the settlers decided to celebrate the autumn harvest with a feast of thanks. In 1776, after the U.S. became independent, the government recommended that a thanksgiving day be held to celebrate the occasion.

Today, thanksgiving is a festival of family reunion. Family members gather for a reunion to give thanks for the good things that they have. A thanksgiving feast thus consisted of cranberry, roast turkey and corn, the same food that was eaten at the first thanksgiving in 1621!

5 things I am thankful of:

  • I have a family and friends that loves me.

  • I have a roof over my head = I have a home to live in, a bed to sleep, food to be fed with, a bathroom to get cleaned, etc… .

  • I am in good health and well fit = I have medicines to cure me in case I get sick, I eat well and healthily and I do sports to keep myself in shape.

  • My family has money = For a school education for me and my sisters, for food, for bath supplies, cleaning supplies, for clothes and shoes, for other outdoor activities, etc… .

  • I live somewhere peaceful and beautiful = No war, no problems (at least not where my house is located), etc… .
